Past[]
Yi is shown details of Yanlao's life leading up to his time as a Sol after entering his Soulscape. In his hometown of Yan Kingdom, Yanlao was very intelligent with machines and technology for his age, the materials and parts for his creations came from those of his ancestors from long ago, and were ancient artifacts worth protecting. yet no one paid attention or made use of them, But Yanlao was the opposite. He saw great potential that the parts can be recycled and reused to make something else, such as weapons, security, and robots big and small. Even Eigong was impressed by his knowledge, earning him the title of the Council's inventor of weaponry.
actually, When Yanlao was young, he regarded ancient artifacts as useless as others, and did not understand his father's will to preserve them for generations. However, when he got older and after being recognized by Eigong for the importance of ancient artifacts, Yanlao paid tribute to his father, recalling the time when his decrepit father risked his death to prevent the damage to the artifacts. Having understood how his family was trying to preserve legacy and pass them on to future generations, Yanlao's will to preserve historical legacies took hold of his mind.
His warehouse grew, with his precious creations and treasures to stay secured. And he made sure it stayed and existed that way for as long the Tiandao Council' reign until the Eternal Cauldron Project. However, as pointed out by Yi, the spaces occupied by the high class nobles's wealthy possessions could've saved more lives of the Solarians, had Yanlao not allowed his own hoarding compulsion to sprawl.
Since infected the Tianhuo virus, Yanlao's health deteriorated day by day on his work. The bones became fragile, and his body began to weaken to the brink of exhaustion. But he still kept going, not caring if his age got up to him. He had wealth, power and knowledge, as long as no one dared to enter. But in the face of death, his ambition of abiding by historical preservation had completely faltered.
His greatest wish was once Tianhuo would be cured, he could teach every Solarian the true meaning of legacy of how everything has meaning, whether new or old.
Present[]
500 years later, Yanlao wakes up from his dormancy by Yi's rebellion. As soon as Yi enters the warehouse, powers up the facility and goes on a search, Yanlao finds Yi through a surveillance camera. Yanlao soothes Yi, who has been betrayed by Eigong, as if he understands, but eventually reveals his limitations by conciliating Yi with the determination that he must release his grudge against Eigong and return for the survival of all Solarians. When Yi sees through Yanlao's persuasion and says, "You and other members of Council are just perpetrators to me. But do you dare force me, the victim, to forgive you?." Yanlao gets angry and calling Yi a spoiled brat who doesn't respect adults.
While Yi searches through the warehouse arbitrarily, Yanlao continues to watch Yi with his surveillance camera, revealing his anger at being insulted. In fact, he invokes the trap of the ceiling falling in the room where Yi enters, puts in his guardians. He even traps Yi in a closed room and attempts to kill Yi by operating an ancient weapon called Xingtian(刑天). Despite Yanlao's proficient machinery, Yi breaks Xingtian's head and opens the room, and easily oustsmarts Yanlao as he uses his hacking skills against Yanlao's own weapons.
Yanlao tries to conciliate Yi for the last time, when Yi tries to go through the Boundless Repository to enter his residence. However, when Yi criticizes the irregularities Yanlao has committed so far, Yanlao can't control his anger anymore. The old Solarian shoots out barrages of tracking bullets to interfere with Yi's path, and tries to kill Yi. Nevertheless, when Yi breaks through the old man's interference and escapes the Boundless Repository, Yanlao braces for his death and takes out Sky Rending Claw as a last resort, preparing for the final claw machine to preserve his own life.
However, the final claw machine prepared by Yanlao is neutralized by Yi's delightful counterattack. Eventually, after Yi hacks Yanlao's Sky Rending Claw to break into his bunker, Yanlao meets his own end. Succumbing to Tianhuo, he mourns about not wanting to die as he finally passes on.
Personality[]
Yanlao is a grouchy, stubborn old man, who always emphasizes respect for seniors like him. He values legacy deeply to ensure his knowledge and power, that he disregards the bigger picture and needs of other people, and even his own health. If one did, he would lecture them and possibly spend hours non stop talking. He always reiterates the saying about to "respect your elders", but this one may not be easy to tolerate.
Deep down, his biggest wish is to be respected for his capabilities, but his actions only make him into a coward who only regards his own self-importance at the expense of the masses.
