Chien (倩) is a Dusk Guardian, and a main character in the Shanhai 9000 Prequel Comic. She is the friend that Shanhai 9000 has been trying to find.

Chien is a black-furred Solarian with cataracts eyes. Her irises used to be darker before she had gone mostly blind.

Past[]
Born in Penglai, Chien was a child whose eyesight deteriorated for unknown causes as she aged. Due to her poor health condition, she was given an home assistive robot of the Shanhai 9000 model, She treated Shanhai 9000, who takes care of her, like a friend. However, the Shanhai 9000 couldn't speak for itself unless the language module was broken and copied the voices of others, so Chien's mother returned Chien's friend Shanhai 9000 and tried to rent it to another model. But Chien didn't want her mother to turn her robot friend into another one, So she painted her favorite character with crayons on the robot's body so that her robot friend wouldn't be stolen. as a result, the pair could stay together.
At one point when Chien completely lost her sight, many Solarians died after contracting the Tianhuo virus that spread to Penglai. But Chien's mother, who only secured two assigned spots from the council for herself and her baby daughter to New Kunlun, so Chien's mother left Chien behind, leaving a lie saying, "I'll pick you up again after securing sure the our baby's safety." Chien believed her mother's request and waited for her to come back without realizing that she had been abandoned, but she was almost attacked by two burglars who stormed the house shortly afterwards until Shanhai 9000 saved her. Mistaking Shanhai 9000 as her mother, Chien went on a journey to find her mom and younger sister.
On their way, Chien was getting hungry and tired. Fortunately, an old Solarian called Old Chang did them a favor, they were able to relax and stay in his camper van for a night and eat food. There, Old Chang told Chien that dying is part of nature and she had no need to be afraid of death. With his help, they were able to secure enough supplies to get to the port, but Chien was unaware that Old Chang had passed away, due to Shanhai 9000 having buried him and taking her away.
When the pair arrive at the temporary pier, Shanhai 9000 accidentally hits a VIP's kiln, and the pair are alerted by the bodyguards who guard her. Fortunately, the VIP forgave them for the disrespect they had committed, put them in the back seat of her kiln, fed her snack to Chien, and did her the favor of taking them to port, which Chien didn't know but was made possible by Shanhai 9000's desperate expression of Chien's innocence with emoticons. Chien wanted to stay with the VIP more, but Shanhai 9000 rushed off to port with Chien because of the concern that the VIP might find out about their stowaway plans.
The pair then found A-Biao, a relative of Old Chang, who was working at the port. A-Biao demanded a reasonable price instead of giving her a chance to board the new Kunlun. But when Shanhai 9000 gives him old chang's tangerine, A-Biao becomes angry because he thinks it makes fun of him, and insulted Chien's visual impairment. So Shanhai 9000 punched A-Biao to avenge Chien, and stole his passcard and ran away.
Eventually, Chien found her mother and younger sister, so Shanhai 9000 tried to leave the port wishing Chien would be safe and happy with family. But Chien's mother abandoned Chien again, who was already infected with Tianhuo, by she coldly pushes Chien down the stairs. In her dying breath and being trampled, Chien tried to reach out to Shanhai 9000, but was too injured to do so.
Present[]
It is implied that Eigong later found Chien through Goumang, and turned Chien into a Dusk Guardian. Chien would later discover that the Tianhuo virus had no cure and everything about New Kunlun was a lie. Sometime later, she got turned into a mutant by Eigong, who presumably found out that Chien was going to blow the whistle on her lies. 500 years later, when Shanhai 9000 frees her from her containment, Chien mindlessly attacks and destroys it. Yi, out of self defense, has to kill her, ending her misery.
Personality[]
As a child, Chien was a kind, naive and sweet girl. She cared deeply for her friend Shanhai 9000, as well as her mother and sister. However, her psyche was broken after her mother decided to abandon her.
As a Mutant, Chien had lost her original personality, having become cold and mindless.
Trivia[]
- Chien was going to have a proper boss fight in Nine Sols (Game), which ended up being cut due to constraints.
